Rogue Amoeba and the Mac App Store

We're occasionally asked if our software will be sold through the Mac App Store. At this time, we do not distribute any of our products there, nor do we have any plans to do so. Unfortunately, Apple's restrictions prevent almost all of our software from being sold in their store. Instead, we focus on providing a fast and easy experience testing and purchasing our software right from our website.

You can download free trials of all of our products right from our front page. This provides you a chance to test the software before you purchase, and we strongly encourage all prospective customers to take advantage.

When you're ready to purchase, we sell our software directly via our site, with a fast and secure checkout process: https://rogueamoeba.com/store/

The Future

We know that some users prefer to purchase software through the Mac App Store, and we will continue to evaluate using it as a sales channel. Unfortunately, between the many shortcomings of the App Store and Apple's many restrictions which preclude most of our software from appearing there, it is not a viable distribution channel for us at present.

Previous Mac App Store Buyers

In the past, Fission and Piezo were available for purchase in Apple's Mac App Store. Those products are no longer sold via the Mac App Store, but they are in active development, with distribution and sales handled directly via our site. Customers who previously purchased via the Mac App Store should transition to the direct version, using our fast and free process.

If you previously purchased Fission via the Mac App Store, we can help you transition to the directly licensed version.

Historical Details on Fission in the Mac App Store

From 2012 to 2021, our audio editor Fission was available for purchase on the Mac App Store. A combination of low sales volume and high frustration in dealing with the endless headaches of the App Store ultimately led to Fission's removal. For more details, see this blog post.

Historical Details on Piezo in the Mac App Store

From 2011 to 2016, we sold our simple audio recorder Piezo through the Mac App Store. Policy changes on Apple's end eventually forced us to remove Piezo. For more details, see this blog post.
