Reverting Your Apple Silicon-Based Mac’s “Startup Security Policy” to Its Default State

Prior to MacOS 14.4, running Piezo on an Apple Silicon-based Mac required adjusting the machine’s Startup Security Policy to be changed from the default Full Security setting to Reduced Security. On recent versions of MacOS, this is no longer necessary.

If you’re running MacOS 14.4 or higher, Piezo no longer requires this adjustment. While the Reduced Security setting is still extraordinarily secure, it’s now possible to revert your Mac to its default state and continue using Piezo.

How to adjust the Startup Security Policy

Step 1: Boot your Mac into Recovery

To boot to the Mac's “Recovery” environment, first shut down your Mac, then press and hold the Power button.

When the screen says “Loading startup options…”, you can let go.

Step 2: Choose Options

Click the Options item, and then click Continue.

Step 3: Select an Admin User

Select a user with administrator privileges, then click Next.

Step 4: Enter Your User Password

You'll be prompted for your login password. Enter it, then click Continue.

Step 5: Open Startup Security Utility

In the menu bar, open the Utilities menu and then choose Startup Security Utility.

Step 6: Unlock the Encrypted Disk

Click the Unlock button.

Step 7: Enter Your User Password

You'll be prompted for your login password. Enter it, then click Unlock.

Step 8: Access the Mac's “Security Policy”

Click your main system drive, then click the Security Policy… button. You can now revert the security policy to its default state.

Step 9: Switch to Full Security

Switch from Reduced Security to the default Full Security option.

Step 10: Approve the Change

Enter your password, then click the OK button. The new security policy will then be applied. When it's finished, the Security Policy window will close.

Click the Apple () menu in the menu bar, to select Restart.

All Set

Once you’ve completed these steps, your Mac will be back to its default Full Security setting. You’re done.
