Update #2: PongSaver is now an official Rogue Amoeba freebie! See this post and download the full version from our Freebies page.

Update: As seen in the comments, the original inspiration for this little screensaver came from hardware developed by Burovormkrijgers.nl. We've updated the download to include a small Read Me with proper acknowledgement. As well, for those looking for a Windows screensaver, be sure to check out the Buro Vormkrijgers site, where one is available.

A couple of days ago, someone showed me the Pong Clock. Like any self-respecting programmer should, I instantly wanted one of my own. Not having the hardware to make a stand-alone clock, I opted to make a Mac OS X screensaver instead. You can download it here: PongSaver

When the game begins, the score is set to the current time. The left side's score is the current hour (in 24-hour time), and the right side's score is the current minute. Then, the right side scores about once a minute to keep up with the real clock. When it gets to 59, the next score makes it wrap around to 00, and the left side will score shortly afterwards to bring the hour forward. At midnight, left's score wraps around to 00.

If you want to use this to actually tell time, be careful around the top of the hour. Since it's not possible for both sides to score simultaneously, there will be a period of time where the score is an hour behind or ahead of the real time. It's also possible for one side to miss the ball by accident, which then forces it to lose a lot more to resync (although if minutes misses only once, it's smart enough to just wait for the clock to catch up). During this period the time can be off by up to 12 hours if the right side missed.

That's all there is to it. Just double-click the PongSaver.saver file to install it. Enjoy!

Coolest feature: when running on two monitors, you get two different games! Great!

Fantastico :)

Goes very nicely with my Asteroids desktop.

Good start!  One problem, when running this on dual monitor setups, the game gets stuck in a loop every minute, instead of randomly hitting the ball in different angles.  In other words, make a preference or just set this to play on only one monitor (though it would be sweet to see this baby span two monitors).

One more thing, I find it funny how I too saw that Pong wall clock you mentioned, and instantly wanted one (though realizing it would probably cost a fortune).  I decided I'd have to settle for something less, so I searched for a Pong screen saver yesterday.  Awesome, you read my mind.

Maybe I can have that wall clock after all, if I rip apart an old Mac laptop and turn it into a digital picture frame.  Old iBooks on eBay, here I come!

Hello to you all,

Nice screensaver.

Our screensaver [PC only at the moment OSX in development] is also online, standalone version of the clock wil be out in januari 2006.

I would appreciate an credit line in your Pong Clock screensaver. For instance a text line reading: orginal idea by Buro Vormkrijgers.nl

I understand i can not keep people [like you] from beating us to it. After all the idea is quite simple. And I do not want to make a big fuss out of it either, since it's only the internet.
And in a way, yes, i'm flattered by your copy.

However.... I would still appreciate the gesture...

Thank you in advance,

Sander Mulder

Dear Sander Mulder from Buro Vormkrijgers,

Maybe yoy should write over your clock a credit line. For instance: "original idea by Nolan Bushnell, developer of Pong".

Now now, An angry mac user, there's more to the idea than just Pong. Sander is correct, a simple credit line is certainly a valid request. We'll have to include a small Read Me file in the archive, and include an acknowledgement.

As for a Windows version, you'll need to look elsewhere.

Of course is a great concept. By the way, thank you for developing this mac version. You and Sander shuold keep in contact to offer mac screensaver for free to mac users at their website.

Thanks!
