Incredibly, with the iPhone OS 1.1.2 update, it is again possible to use non-iTunes Music Store files as ringtones. We've updated MakeiPhoneRingtone to work with iTunes 7.5 and iPhone OS 1.1.2. Be sure you're up to date, then grab MakeiPhoneRingtone to use custom ringtones with your iPhone.

Drop any AAC file on MakeiPhoneRingtone and it will be processed and passed off to iTunes, where it will be handled as a Ringtone. The file will show up in iTunes' Ringtone sub-library as well as the Ringtones tab in the iPhone section, where you can sync it to your iPhone. Once it's on your iPhone, you can use the file as a global ringtone, per-contact ringtone, or even an alarm clock sound.

We recommend our own audio editor Fission to help you create ringtones, as it can losslessly edit AAC files. You can also edit almost any audio format in Fission then convert to AAC. But regardless of how you create your ringtones, any AAC audio file 40 seconds or shorter1 will work just fine with MakeiPhoneRingtone, so download it now!

Please Note: Custom ringtones are undocumented and unsupported by Apple, and they may change or break with future updates, as they have in the past. It's possible that the change to again allow custom ringtones is accidental and will be locked out rapidly, though we certainly hope this is not the case. Regardless, with iTunes 7.5 and iPhone OS 1.1.2, you can again use MakeiPhoneRingtone to get custom ringtones on your phone free of charge.

Footnotes:
1. Actually, ringtone files (currently) have a hard ceiling of exactly 40.04 seconds. MakeiPhoneRingtone will pass off files of any length, but the Ringtones tab in the iPhone area of iTunes won't show files longer than 40.04 seconds. I used Fission to determine exact file lengths. 40.04 works, and 40.05 doesn't. Bizarre, but true.

Any chance you'll port it to Windows?
Pretty please?

If you want a ringtone longer than 40.04 seconds and/or want to use MP3 files, use iToner!  It also offers ringtone management and synchronization of iTunes playlists, and it's only $15!

I, too, use iToner and it's well worth every penny for managing transferring my ringtones to my iPhone without a hitch.

I need to add that Rouge Amoeba'ss version for free is awesome, and didn't mean to downplay it -- just offering a suggestion.

I also like iToner.  I thought it was nice to take my custom clips.  First I used the Quadra 840av startup sound from a 48KHz recording out of that great sound system.  It was really easy.  Then, I drug in a track from my brother's old band, LocKSteP, for when he called.  Of course, I like free software as much (or more) than the next guy, it seems worth it to pay for a reliable offering that makes the adjustment intuitive.

"Reliable"? iToner was broken for weeks before an update finally came out. Whether that was Apple's fault or not, it's hardly a reliable solution.

I'm happy to have this for free. I definitely wouldn't pay for software that was a hack and could be broken by Apple like iToner was.

Does the track length maximum change with different bit rates? Because 40 seconds at 128 Kbps equals 640 KB, at 256 Kbps it's 1.25 MB; both nice round numbers. I don't have any good explanation for the .04 seconds, but maybe they allow overhead for track metadata, and if you don't have metadata that excess can be used for audio data?

Dustin: No, we have no plans for a Windows version. Sorry.

Dennis: Bitrate doesn't seem to matter. I tested with both a 128 kbps and a 192 kbps AAC, and the results were the same - it seems to just be time-based.

Awesome! I'm back up and running with my custom ringtones, this is great. Let's hope Apple leaves things alone!

Make sure you have the versions they say, iTunes 7.5 and iPhone 1.1.2. And why not try a shorter file? It seems dumb to sit right on the edge there.

It works great for me!

So I just got my German iPhone, and now it's ridiculously easy to turn those tracks I created (*) with easybeat years ago into ringtones. That's perfect timing. Thank you, Rogue Amoeba!

(*) note to Apple: Yes, there are tracks where the user owns exclusive exploitation rights.

If you don't want to pay for a Music cutting Program too you should try Audacity.

Or you just go into Information tab in iTunes and change the Start/End Positions of the Track you want to a maximum difference of 40.04.
Then you just rightclick the Song and select Convert to AAC (you will have to set your Import setting to AAC for this if you haven't already)
=> You'll get the selected cut from you original file.
However you cannot fade in/out with this and you need to remember to remove the Start/End positions or your file will only play that 40 seconds if you listen to it ^^

The 7.5 / 1.1.2 upgrade is probably contaminated with strong but dormant DRM code and Apple is baiting us with this ringtone control!

Don’t say I didn’t warn you! ;)

Perry,

Every iPhone ring-tone application was broken for weeks by Apple.

Bob

Is it possible that the 40.04 second length has to do with the length of time the phone will ring before rolling over to voicemail?

I'd be pretty upset if someone delayed answering my call just because they wanted to get to the "good part" of their custom ring tone. ;o)

I don't use any of these programs. I just SSH into the iPhone and drag and drop. Works everytime, plus you don't have to worry about a time limit.

You guys so totally rock.

Oh, wait, something useful. Actually, the process for me was a bit odd. I took the ringtones I had made for 7.4/1.0 and dropped them on MakeiPhoneRingtone 1.3, and the ringtones showed up in the ringtone list. I told iTunes to sync all ringtones, and hit apply. The ring tones didn't show up. But, after I unplugged and replugged the phone, and it was able to sync normally, the ringtones showed up on the phone as expected.

Wed Nov 14 22:38:06 2007

having used it previously, I had problems getting it all to work with 7.5 and 1.1.2.

What finally fixed it for me was the following....
Go into iTunes
Delete/remove all your prior custom made ringtones (all ringtones in my case)

Put them somewhere safe, not in the iTunes directory
make sure iTunes is showing no ringtones, and they are not in the music library either.

Update your phone/restore your phone again to the 1.1.2 firmware - this will not erase the phone content, just update 1.1.2 over 1.1.2
make sure you have the ringtone syncing turned OFF for this purpose

Okay, you now have iTunes with no ringtones and an iPhone with no ringtones.

Remove the iPhone

Make sure all your ringtones have the m4a extension

Drop them all on MakeiPhoneRingtones

Plug the iPhone in

Turn on Ringtone syncing

You should be alright now

This is weird.  All seems fine, the Ringtone is in the Ringtones panel in iTunes and plays fine there.  It's also visible on the iPhone under Custom Ringtones - but it won't make a sound on the iPhone?  It seems to be essentially silent?

Great job, folks. Particularly useful for music that iTunes doesn't sell or doesn't allow to be made into ringtones.

Hey,
I just wanted to thank you folks in all of your prokaryoticness for making this kind of thing for us.  I run 10.4, 7.5, and 1.1.2, and I really appreciate having my ringtones back.  I only upgraded to 1.1.1 (so I could jailbreak and upgrade to 1.1.2) after knowing that this little program you made worked again.  I could probably do the same thing having jailbreaked my iphone, but I only do easy things, and you made a very easy solution.
Thanks.  Every time my phone rings I think of rogue amoeba and I am happy that they exist.

Works GREAT! I using with iTunes 7.5/ iPhone 1.1.2 (never unlocked it or hacked it). I edited my song to desired length with GARAGEBAND - yes that is another option, probably you already have in your mac. Used export to disc command. Dropped the file in the application window - Bingo! Works great on my iPhone. Now I am making more!!

Freakin' Awesome, as certain we're-now-too-grown-up-to-say-"addict" Mac lovers used to say.

I want you guys to know that I had given up on this project.  But, BECAUSE of this little side-project, I discovered Fission, which I bought a license for last night (along with Audio Hijack Pro).  And that was BEFORE I found this page which says that MakeiPhoneRingtone was "back from the dead."

In other words - you actually EARNED a customer (at least one, anyway, LOL) from this, even when I had thought it was dead forever because of Apple's need to lock it down.

You guys rock.

Using windows xp and the latest updates:

I cut the file down to 30 sec...even 10 sec, convert it to ACC, change the extension to m4r, click on and open it under "Ringtones" and it shows up and plays just fine.  I see (itunes) it when i am syncing the iphone too but nothing shows up on the phone under sounds.  WTF?

I restored it and everything nothing is working...wtf am i missing?
