Last week we talked a great deal about iPhone ringtones on our company weblog Under The Microscope. The topic began with the idea of using Fission to edit audio files for ringtones, and we later released a small application called MakeiPhoneRingtone, to get the ringtones onto the iPhone.

MakeiPhoneRingtone does just that - it makes iPhone ringtones. Once you have an AAC file edited down, simply drop it on MakeiPhoneRingtone, and it will be passed off to iTunes and turned into a Ringtone. The file will show up in iTunes' Ringtone section, and you'll be able to sync it to your iPhone.

Today we're happy to release MakeiPhoneRingtone version 1.2, as an official Rogue Amoeba Freebie. This update will work regardless of where your iTunes Library is located, a problem some users of older versions faced. You can now find the latest version on the Freebies page, so head on over and get started making ringtones for your iPhone.

Early reports coming in say that the latest iTunes update released today (7.4.2) removes any ringtones made with MakeiPhoneRingtone. Is there any confirmation on this or plans for a fix?

Looks like the latest Itunes Update turns back any ringtones that were made with "MakeiphoneRingtone", and pulls them out of the ringtone folder...hopefully you guys will have a new update that fixes this

Update: Well, that didn't take long. According to Shadowfax in the MacRumors forums, all you've got to do to get ringtones back is flip a metadata bit and change the file extension back to .m4r -- something MacRumors says is more indicative of Apple "solidifying the format" than actively trying to kill ringtones. We're also hearing iToner still works, although we've yet to confirm. Check the read link for Shadowfox's instructions.

Nice work on the preference guys. Small detail - I had to quit and restart to make the preference take effect.

I accidentally updated itunes to 7.4.2 and the ringtones dissapeared from itunes but they stayed on the iphone itself. wierd. the custom ringtones all have been assigned to contacts so maybe that was the hook? i even powercycled and they stayed on the iphone but are NOT in the itunes ringtone folder. wierd. cant wait for the update rogue amoeba!!

iphonehack: Did you "sync" your iPhone with iTunes 7.4.2? From your post it would appear you believe that your iPhone communicates wirelessly with your copy of iTunes. No changes will happen to your iPhone until you sync it with iTunes.

Adam- i have checked itunes and i have checked the ='do not auto sync iphone' so, even tho i updated, the ringers are on the iphone still. i guess i did that earlier in the hopes of preventing this kind of thing. thanks formaking me aware of what i had already done. lol. so, i guess im not syncing until amoeba releases the update!! Thanks!!

is there a date in which we can expect the update of makeiphone ringtone for 7.4.2?

Hahaha. "Is there a date when we can expect an update?" Are you serious?

As they've said from the get-go, iTunes 7.4.2 might break this. As far as I know, there's no known workaround yet. MakeiPhoneRingtones was just a nice face on the hacks that were out there. It was useful, now it's broken. Hopefully a new hack will be discovered, but I'm not holding my breath - I bet this app is dead.

no nee to be a douchebag about it. After all, it's not my fault that you're probably a 40 year old guy who lives with his mom, or an over privilaged 14 year old kid, who again still lives with his mom. I'm fully aware of how to get ringtones on my iPhone with iFuntastic, along with other various ways to do it. I was just wondering because I like to support rogue amoeba. Anywho, have fun being alone, while I go hang out with my wife :)

Just thought I'd check in and see if there has been any more progress with MakeiPhoneRingtone. I understand it's a free app and thus probably not high on the priority list. But just wanted to let you know that I appreciate you making this available, and I would probably even be willing to pay a small fee for this application if there were a firm commitment to further development. Thanks for all you guys do!

If you are on a Mac, you can use iFuntastic to put the ringtones on your iPhone. Simply drag your created ringtone into the "System Ringtone" folder instead of Ringtones. Add's them perfectly.
