We here at Rogue Amoeba are happy and more than a little frightened to be unveiling the Airfoil for Windows Public Beta, available for download right now.

Introducing Airfoil For Windows
Airfoil Windows Screenshot

If you're not familiar with Airfoil, it enables any audio to be sent to Apple's popular AirPort Express hardware, which is otherwise confined to a monogamous and monotonous relationship with iTunes. With Airfoil you can send audio from RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, and just about any other audio application to the AirPort Express.

Since Airfoil was first released for the Mac fourteen months ago, users have both pleaded for and demanded a Windows version, they've speculated that we had one in the works, and we even used it as part of an April Fools' joke this year. And while we are most definitely not leaving the Mac platform, we did feel Airfoil was just too good not to share with our Windows brethren.

So here it is, the Airfoil for Windows Public Beta. It's not completely done, but all of the features for the 1.0 are in place, and we're working to nail down any remaining bugs. Please download Airfoil for Windows now, and report any issues directly to us. Otherwise, you can purchase Airfoil for Windows for $25 from the Buy Airfoil menu item right inside the application. Your license will be valid on the final Airfoil for Windows 1.0.

So whether you're running Mac OS X or Windows, you can learn more about Airfoil or download it directly right now. You can also read the full press release for today here.

Strange... they sound like indie Mac developers, but the words coming out of their mouths are all strange!

Congratulations on this.  As I only use OS X, I can't help you out with testing or registration, but diversity is always a Good Thing™, and I'm confident that y'all are Macheady enough not to forget to develop for OS X. :)

lol. Cool. And yes, I did sign up on the April Fools Windows Mailing List. heh.

Best wishes and great work fellas. Lots of folks are going to like this. ;-)

A feature I'd love to see in Airfoil (or another app), and would pay handsomely for would be the ability to make the computer running it act like an airport express, allowing other computers to stream audio to its speakers.  I'm guessing this is probably pretty hard to do - but would be great if someone out there decided to do it.

My thoughts:

Why Airfoil first? My guess is that it's just testing the waters... if it works like Airfoil for the Mac, that means you've already ported all of your hijacking infrastructure to Windows... the other apps can't be far behind.

Cool!

See slimp3.com and read the FAQ. It does this already and it's free.

I asked thees guys to port this about a year ago. They suggested I switch to a Mac!  Thanks for the recomendation.  Nice work on the port.  It's getting cold down here in hell.

Holy shit.  I can't believe it.  I bought the Linksys a ways back when the pain of not being able to use AF with my AE was too great (returned the Linksys).  Now I am free.  I test as soon as I get home.  Why am I even still at work?!

How was it developing for Windows vice OS X? Any hangups? Is there anything in Window's Development Land (tm) that you would like to see in XCode?

Inquiring minds want to know!

:P

Howdy folks!

Stridey> Hopefully it'll work out well. We're still committed to the Mac, first and foremost.

Lee> Let's hope so 8)

Isaac> We've had occasional requests for this, and while we understand the desire, right now it looks like a lot of work with little reward, and the possibility to irk Apple. We'll see what happens in the future though.

Quentin> This really isn't us testing the waters - Airfoil is far and away the most requested port, because nothing like it exists on Windows. See this post.

We'll post more on this shortly, I imagine but as above, Rogue Amoeba is and will remain a Mac company.

Brad> Hope it works out, let us know.

Scott> We're planning to post something in-depth about all of this, so stay tuned. But in short, this was done by a contractor, with guidance from us. So as far as a direct Xcode to VS6, we don't have much to say. But we'll be talking more about the overall development soon.

Why not just set up iTunes to share on the others machines?

after a very drunken night drinking Guinness and sticking Figure Panini World Cup 2006 stickers, I come back to PC to find announcement about Airfoil for PC!  My god, it works first time on WinXP, and pipes tunes from WMP and SK Jukebox first time, no trouble! Fantastic.  Time to open more Guinness and listen to more thumping tunes from SK Jukebox (excellent MP3 juke, do a Google) to my amp in the bar downstairs!

My thanks to Paul et al at Rogue Amoeba.  Chalky

Ahem, can I add to last post that it's not infact 20:57:50 i.e. US time, this is 02:00 British time, and I'm still partying hard with a houseful.  Damn, just got interference. Must be sign that I need to register Airfoil. Will do that tomorrow, when I can trust myself using credit card!  Good night one and all.

So, what you're saying is, Apple made some hardware that was proprietary and couldn't be used with any other software besides the software they wrote, and so therefore, you wrote some new software for it?

Sounds pretty par for the course.  Tons of wireless media devices available that work in Windows -and- Mac.

I would like a program to send 5.1 surround to the airport express.  My stero is connected via optical audio and everything would work beautifuly together if this were possible

wow folks you are shere magicians!

another feature you might bother to make is a remote control software for various handhelds (analogous to a playerpal for example) that can switch among several AE's!
