Continuing in our seeming obsession with iPhone ringtones, we've got MakeiPhoneRingtone 1.1 available for download now. Version 1.1 uses the more stable "stik" method of turning AAC files into ringtones, as discovered by Cleverboy.

Click to download MakeiPhoneRingtone 1.1

As noted earlier this week, you can create ringtones with Fission, and you can turn non-AAC files into ringtones with the right Export settings in Fission. Once you have the file, just drag and drop onto MakeiPhoneRingtone, and you'll be set. We hope you'll check out Fission for ringtone and general audio editing, but of course MakeiPhoneRingtone works with AAC files from any source.

MakeiPhoneRingtone has been tested on many different setups, but we can always use more details to improve it. If you have any problems, issues or questions, email us directly so we can see what's up.

Has anyone tried using SMIL files as ringtones yet? Basically, constructing a text file that uses XML to reference another music file? You can set start time and end time, but not any fading. This would, hypothetically, allow you to use Protected AAC files on the iPhone as ringtones without paying the Apple/RIAA/idiot tax.

---TEXT FILE BEGINS NEXT LINE---
<smil>
<body>
<audio src="/var/root/Media/SONGTITLE.m4p"
  clip-begin="npt=193.5" clip-end="npt=0:3:32.33"/>
</body>
</smil>
---TEXT FILE ENDS LAST LINE---

Change the SONGTITLE to a song's filename stored on your iPhone (this might be a tricky one, because if the iPhone is like the iPod, the songs are stored with nonsense file names in a nonsense file structure (hashed)--pick one, download it, see if is a song that is ringtone worthy)
Save text file as <ringtonename>.smil

It doesn't work for me; It says that I need iTunes 7.4 or later (I have  7.4.1).

Neither version has worked for me.
I edited a song in Peak to 20 seconds, loaded it into iTunes and made it an  AAC (m4a) and placed it on my desktop.
Then I tried both versions of MakeiPhoneRingtone.
Both have given me the following:

An error occured while processing "Import".
Error: Couldn't open

Although, I can perform the ringtone loading manually with the same file by using the procedure of changing the extension.

Even when I try making another file from another piece of music, this program has not worked once correctly,
iTunes 7.4.1

I downloaded version 1.1 and when I drop an .m4a file on it, it keeps saying:

Please upgrade to the latest version of iTunes
iPhone ringtones require iTunes 7.4 or later

I am running iTunes 7.4.1, so that isn't the problem. I should add that I was able to make a ringtone with MakeiPhoneRingtone 1.0.

Anyone know what's going on here?

It works great for me. Maybe you guys should contact them, that's what the post says to do.

Same problem here, I had 7.4, got the error message, updated to 7.4.1, still got the message. I, too, was able to make ringtones with version 1.0.

Any thoughts on allowing the dropping of .mp3s?  That would be very awesome!

MakeiPhoneRingtone brings my ringtone (exported from iTunes) into iTunes to sync to my iPhone, but I don't have a Ringtones source in my left pane. :-(

I haven't had much luck with either version either. I agree with Martin, dropping MP3s and letting MakeiPhoneRingtone convert the audio to AAC first, then to ringtone format would be AWESOME. Either that or an upgrade to Fission so that the save as ringtone version worked with MP3 files.

Two comments.  In order to get the Ringtones source, you have to go ahead and go through the BS with Apple to buy a ringtone.  You don't have to actually buy one, but you have to act like you're going to (in order to authorize the computer again, sign the agreement, etc), then cancel before making the ringtone, and the source will appear.

Also, I'd pay $15 for the software (more than I'd spend on ringtones total) if it supported MP3s and a wider range of file types in general.  I use it already, and I'd pay for it just to have ringtones I could control and to avoid repaying for (twice!) for songs I already have on CD and to be able to make ringtones from things that aren't commercially-released songs.  Maybe you could just build the functionality right into Fission, which is a fine editor that I've been using to combine tracks.

Jeff, if you're spend $15 for software that supported MP3s, you should buy iToner:

...it works great!

For those with error messages, try repairing permissions

for those who need a ringtone item in the left column, go to your itunes library in finder and make a ringtones folder and then restart itunes.

How do I put MakeiPhoneRingtone onto my actual phone? When I use WinRAR it doesn't give me an application to open.

As noted guys, please contact us directly at hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com with any issues, and we'll see what we can find.

Scott: This is an interesting idea. However, my guess is that the iPhone would refuse to play these, as it does with standard .m4p files as ringtones.

Wayne: No, I'm afraid this is for Mac OS X only.

Martin: While that would be nice, it would also require converting the file on the fly. You can convert audio from MP3 to AAC using Fission - see this article:

http://www.rogueamoeba.com/utm/posts/Article/Fission-And-AAC-2007-09-12-12-00

neilr: As noted elsewhere, once you visit the iTunes Store, the Ringtones sub-category should appear.

Jeff Medcalf: You don't actually have to go that far, as far as we've seen - simply visiting the Store should be enough. As far as paying for this, Fission already handles everything you want. When you're done, Save to AAC (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/utm/posts/Article/Fission-And-AAC-2007-09-12-12-00) then drop on MIR.

Frank: In just about all cases, repairing permissions does absolutely nothing. Anyone having errors should contact us directly, at hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com.

Julie: MakeiPhoneRingtone is an application for Mac OS X, running on OS X, not on the iPhone. Sorry.

My iTunes music folder is not in ~user/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/ which MakeiPhoneRingtone expects. Can this version be updated with a preference for the location of the iTunes music library?

If rogueamoeba can update MakeiPhoneRingtone to be compatible with the new release of iTunes (7.4.2) that will be great, thanks for the previous great work!

Jo

The new iTunes 7.4.2 erases all ringtones unless purchased from the iStore. That will be great if you guys can make your program compatible with this new version. You guys are awesome.
