Yesterday I posted about using Fission to create ringtones for the iPhone. Editing with Fission is straightforward, but getting the resulting files onto the iPhone is a bit tricky. The processes for both iTunes 7.4 and iTunes 7.4.1 work, but they're not simple.

So we thought, why not make this easier? Enter MakeiPhoneRingtone, a free download available right now. Simply drag and drop AAC ringtones (made with any editor, though we hope you'll use Fission) onto this tiny app, and they'll show up in the iPhone Ringtones tab. Sync your iPhone and they'll ready for use.

Apple may release iTunes 7.4.2 in the next few days and change how this works all over again. They were quick to update from version 7.4 to 7.4.1, and ultimately, if Apple wants to lock out home brewed ringtones, they can. That said, we'll do our best to keep MakeiPhoneRingtone working with iTunes updates. Further, if MakeiPhoneRingtone does turn out to be a tenable solution, we'll see about integrating it right into Fission.

For now though, check out Fission to create iPhone ringtones and then use the free MakeiPhoneRingtone to get them onto the iPhone! If you have any problems, issues or questions, email us directly so we can see what's up.

Update (9/11/07 1:30 PM): Apple has now turned on the Ringtones feature in the Store. Once you visit the store, you should see a Ringtones category in your Library (if not, open up Preferences and turn on the newly-visible Ringtones checkbox in the General preferences). Now you can manage all the ringtone files that have been added to iTunes with MakeiPhoneRingtone!

Update (9/13/07 3:00 PM): We've updated MakeiPhoneRingtone to version 1.1 (and changed the download links above). Version 1.1 uses the more stable "stik" method of creating ringtones - read about it or just download the latest.

Thanks for the utility. I've been using Fission to edit many of my AAC files to convert to ringtontes, and was able to create 24 of them within an hour or so (I'm fussy). Great to see a little more help in getting them on the iPhone. Thanks once again!

You guys are great - I bought Fission a long time ago to chop up recordings of my bands' live shows, and I'm pretty thrilled to have another use for it.

Direct Fission integration would be awesome!

Thanks!

Hate to be this dense: how do I make an mp3 into AAC?

Bork
Tue Sep 11 12:14:22 2007

Having read many articles about creating ringtones from songs that were not purchased from the iTunes music store, there appears to be a lot of problems regarding the lack of ability to remove the songs from the iPhone Ringtones tab.

Is this still a problem when using MakeiPhoneRingtone?

This whole process seems a bit sketchy.

Jason
Tue Sep 11 12:19:18 2007

Just change the import option in your iTunes prefs.  Then underthe advanced pulldown at the top of your iTunes choose convert to AAC.  It will make a copy for you.

Tue Sep 11 13:25:07 2007

Thanks for the praise guys. Let us know if you have issues or questions. Let's see what I can answer right now.

Howard and BitBoy: You can use iTunes to convert an MP3 to an AAC.

Fission can turn ANY file into an AAC, though it's may not be the best method.

When you save, choose the "Export With QuickTime" option and set it to MPEG-4, then click Settings. File Format should be MP4, then in Audio you want:
AAC-LC (Music)
Any Data Rate (128 or higher is best)
Stereo
44.100 kHZ
Any encoding quality (the better it is, the longer it will take, but it should only be a few seconds).

This will produce an .mp4 file, but it's an AAC. Rename it from NAME.mp4 to NAME.m4a, and MakeiPhoneRingtone will be able to pass it off to iTunes.

Bork: Now that the iTMS Ringtone feature is on, you can turn on the Ringtone sub-library, in iTunes preferences -> General -> Show. From there, you can manage all ringtones.

Dr. Fegg: No, this isn't something we'll make for Windows, sorry.

Howard: Protected AAC files can't be edited or re-encoded directly. Burning them and reimporting, or recording with Audio Hijack Pro, will remove the protection.

Erik: I'm fairly certain you know why this isn't possible, but for anyone else, Fission can't edit protected AAC files because Apple won't let us (or anyone).

Fission does love iTunes Plus files though: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/utm/posts/News/Fission-loves-iTunesPlus-2007-05-30-17-30

Paul (Rogue Amoeba Staff)
Tue Sep 11 14:19:31 2007

Howard: No need to repost. Protected AAC files can't be edited or re-encoded directly. Burning them and reimporting, or recording with Audio Hijack Pro, will remove the protection.

Byron: Is this with a .m4a file? If you can email hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com, we can give you a debug build to try out so we can narrow this down.

Rob: Whups! Looks like I neglected one step - you need to rename the file from NAME.mp4 to NAME.m4a. Then MIR will handle it.  I've edited the above.

I may be missing something, but even after purchasing and authorizing 'real' ringtones, I can't get MakeiPhoneRingTone to work with my own AAC files.

MakeiPhoneRingTone adds the file to my Ringtone sidebar, but when I tried to sync my iPhone (with the file called Lead Guitar) I get the error:

"Lead Guitar" was not copied to the iPhone "iPhone" because it cannot be played on this iPhone.

Note that I can play the ringtone "Lead Guitar" in iTunes and when I show it in finder it is a .m4r file. Any thoughts?

Anyone know a source for good "Apple-esque" ringtones?  The ones that came with the iPhone are pretty cool, but I want more.  The new iTunes ringtone options are not my style.  I don't want 30 seconds of a song.  I want something designed to be a ringtone.

I have the same problem as Greg -- I get the "cannot be copied" error, even though the song is an AAC file and was added successfully to the Ringtones list by your software.

I suspect the problem may ultimately be because I have been adding and subtracting ringtones quite a bit in the last week, as I tried different methods of doing it each time Apple blocked an older method or a new utility came out.

Perhaps, I need to restore my iPhone to get things sorted out and working again. However, if you have a better solution, I'd like to know. Thanks.

I have the same problem as Matt & Ralph, however renaming the file to a .m4a from a .m4r in my Music/ITunes Music/Import allowed me to sync it with my IPhone.

Sounds like you are watching iTunes to load the file up, why don't you watch Users/$User$/Music/ITunes Music/Import (or whatever directory) for files?

Johndan
Tue Sep 11 23:16:09 2007

I haven't had a chance to do any exhaustive testing, but I was running into the same "cannot be played on the iPhone" problem after using MakeiPhoneRingtone. Like Paul, my music library isn't on the system volume.

So I dig around in RA's earlier info about making iPhone Ringtones, and this seemed to work:

1. Create the ringtone using MakeiPhoneRingtone, using the instructions above (or in the online help).
2. Ignore the error message(s).
3. In iTunes, open the Ringtones folder in the Library section at the left.
4. Select the ringtone you just created (which still won't sync because iTunes Sync says the iPhone can't play it).
5. From the File menu, choose Show in Finder (apple-R). This will take you out into the Finder with the ringtone file selected.
6. Choose Get Info (apple-I).
7. Change the extension of the ringtone file to .m4a

When you go back into iTunes, you should now be able to sync your ringtone with your iPhone.

No promises, but it seems to be working for me (at least for the first two ringtones I followed this procedure for).

Quakelesan: We'll need a bit more detail on what's going on, but as noted, please email us directly at hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com, so we can see what's up.

Ted: The problem here is that MIR failed to rename the file's extension (from .m4r to .m4a) after it's added to iTunes. We're hunting down when and why this occurs. If you email us directly at hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com, we can give you a test build.

In the meantime, simply manually renaming the files (they're in your iTunes Library -> Ringtones folder). And yes, that falls under the category of "Things MIR should do for you", and when it works, it does 8).

Paul: This error is the other bug we've seen, and we're working on a fix for this too. If you email us directly at hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com, we can give you a test build.

Pack: I'm not sure which of the two errors you're seeing, but if you email us directly at hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com, we can give you a test build.

As for "some program", we're working to provide a free solution to benefit you and thousands of others. It's brand new, it won't be flawless, but we will work to improve it, if you let us. So get in touch.

Matt and Ralph: What's happening is that MIR can't find the file after iTunes moves it, and so it can never rename it as needed. It then fails to sync because of this. If you email us directly at hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com, we can get more details and a test build to you.

Anyone else having this problem: This is a known issue, though we're still working on finding the exact cause and fix.  If you email us directly at hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com, we can give you a test build.

Ryan: We're watching the hard drive for the file to appear where iTunes puts it, not watching iTunes itself. In rare cases, iTunes fails to do this, putting it somewhere else, or nowhere at all. If you email us directly at hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com, we can give you a test build.

Johndan: Indeed, renaming the file to .m4a will cure the issue (with iTunes 7,.4.1) - that's the step that MIR isn't getting to do. We're working on it and hope to have a fix shortly.

Ok I have my .m4a file actually in the ringtone folder of itunes, NOT in itunes itself. I drag the .m4a to MIR, wait several seconds. "The ringtone file could not be renamed." "the file rt1.m4r did not appear in the itunes ringtone folder after 15 seconds"

(interesting that the prompt says  ".m4r"?)

Ive done it with my iphone disconnected and connected. MIR only takes the .m4a not .m4r or .aac. Am I missing anything?

hello,

thx for this practical utility!

but it doesn't work for moi.

i use iTunes 7.41
OS X 10.4.10

my steps:
1) i took own both official & pirated .mp3 song
converted in iTunes to AAC or .m4a

2) drop on your MakeiPhoneRingtone

3) new .m4a file opens correctly in iTunes - iPhone - Ringtones tab!
1st time i was successful with all other online solutions, thx!

yet it gives this error msg:
"the ringtone file could not be renamed. The file "...m4r" did not appear in the iTunes Ringtone folder after 15 seconds"

say what?!
- who renamed the file?
- the file is still with extension .m4a on finder level
- what Ringtone folder? it does appear in iTunes app under Ringtone tab!
- error msg popped up instantly, what 15 sec?
- anyway, it did appear!?! + why would it appear and yet give me next error msg:

4) error msg upon sync:
"file was not copied to the iPhone because it cannot be played on this iPhone."

why would the ringtone be recognized & yet not play on iPhone?!
i tried both own + official or drm music files...

surely, there's a quick fix to this?
what am i doing wrong?
how soon can you add update to your MIR app?
also, is it possible for you to auto-convert to AAC simultaneously, so MIR is the 1-step solution?

thanks!

Ahoy folks! We've got a dev. build of MIR 1.0.1 that I may as well share in the comments. When we're satisfied with it, we'll post it in a new article as final, but we want to see that it cures the issues people have had. If you emailed us, check your email, you should have a reply. If not, here's the scoop:

First up, delete from iTunes any ringtones that are failing. You can do this from the Ringtones sub-library, by highlighting and pressing option-delete.

Then try this test build and re-add the files you want as ringtones. We believe we've corrected the known issues, so hopefully this will get you set:

http://www.bigblueamoeba.com/lab/nightlys/MIR101d1.zip

If it works, great. If not, please email us at heello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com so we can troubleshoot.

Wed Sep 12 13:51:04 2007

Chase: Grab the dev build from http://www.bigblueamoeba.com/lab/nightlys/MIR101d1.zip, and you should be all set.

Kim M.: I'm not sure I follow - you got a ringtone not copied error on a purchased ringtone? That happens if your machine hasn't authorized it yet - play the file locally first and see if it works. I had the same issue, iTunes 7.4.1 and ringtones require a lot of authorizing.

kdlmac: It sounds like you're using the Fission trial, which introduces volume adjustment to audio. To avoid this, just purchase a license key.

Darien: MIR is Mac-only, sorry.

rolf: You should grab the 1.0.1d1 build from http://www.bigblueamoeba.com/lab/nightlys/MIR101d1.zip

I must be missing something.

I have tried it with my iphone plugged in and unplugged. I have closed and reopened itunes. One interesting thing is that after I stick a .m4a file onto MIR i get no errors, nothing. (which means MIR must have not had a problem) I can watch the .m4a file going to the import file and it stays .m4a but nothing happens in itunes other than the window is brought foward after I put a m4a file on MIR. Do you have to import the ringtones or the folder or something?

Thanks for all posting your tips regarding the m4a and m4r workaround.
Here is my $0.02 ... On Windows ...

Followed the mp3 to m4a conversion process by changing preferences in itunes and converting a copy of my mp3. Then I renamed it on disk to .m4r and then imported into itunes (import or drag and drop)
Then the sync to the iphone failed with the "cannot be played on this iphone" crap.
Right-click the ringtone, Open in windows explorer, rename BACK to .m4a and go back to itunes.
Now play the ringtone, or get info or something that will cause itunes to say "cannot be found, do you want to locate it?". Then link the ringtone back up with the same file on disk that now has a .m4a extension and Voila! it syncs and plays on the iphone!

John
Thu Sep 13 02:23:49 2007

This is a really backwards way to do it, but I just got the new iTunes and it still works:

-Find an MP3 I want in iTunes, Show in Finder.
-Drag into FInal Cut Pro, render.
-Edit it down and adjust the sound level, throw some fades on the end.
-Export out as an AIFF
-Import AIFF into iTunes and convert it to an AAC
-Drop the AAC into MakeiPhoneRingtone program
-Sync Phone!

Well, I had the "Cannot Import.." problem w/ the MIR 1.0 on my Mac mini. Of note, the iTunes library resides on an external drive affixed to the Airport Base Station USB (802.11n); Front Row has problems seeing the songs, too, although iTunes does not.

That stated, I downloaded last night's (9/12) build and tried it out this morning. Now I get an error window stating I need to be using at least version 7.4 of iTunes and to upgrade. However, I'm on 7.4.1 on 10.4.10 already.

D9
Thu Sep 13 08:25:36 2007

Ah, hah...I just found a solution to my problem. I had been using the drag & drop method onto the MIR icon. If I open MIR first and then drag the song onto the MIR app window (stats "Drop AAC Files Here"), then it works properly. It uploads fine to the iPhone, and the iPhone can use the ringtone without problems.

It seems that if your iTunes library isn't in the default location, MakeiPhoneRingtone will give you an error "Could not find iTunes Music Folder"

Nunyadambus: Fission will work great to edit audio and create a ringtone. As far as getting the files onto the RAZR, however, you're on your own.

Russ: Yes, MakeiPhoneRingtone is for Mac OS X only.

e-coli: This is not the case - MakeiPhoneRingtone will work with your iTunes Music folder in many locations. This gets tricky, however, as we need to determine where the folder is by looking at iTunes prefs and more. If you're having an issue, please contact us directly at hello (at) rogueamoeba (dot) com.

Does this still work with 7.4.2?

WCP
Mon Sep 17 21:20:56 2007

Looks like the new iTunes breaks this and blocks any previously created ringtones.

Confirmed. 7.4.2 removes all those ringtones you just made with this utility. :-(

Not surprised, though.

All my wonderful ring tones are GONE!!!

Indeed.  7.4.2 killed the ringtones.  Now we just sit back and wait for the next hackaround :)

Nunyadambus: RAZR should connect via BT without issue.  Use Fission to make your RTs, then send to RAZR via BT file transfer- I've been doing this for years (without Fission).

Will there be an update to this or was it a one shot deal?  Or did I miss the update somewhere on this page?

Waiting to sync my iphone again but don't feel like losing the ringtones

Ahh! those bastards! I lost all of my ringtones! Apple wants to strongarm us all to pay for iTunes store.
I Hope there is another update. i don't think I'll synch my phone until there is another verion.

I've stayed with iTunes 7.4.1 and continue to be able to sync and keep my ringtones.  If you've already updated you can find the older version on version tracker.

I was able to give a friend ringtones from my Mac to their PC with a memory stick and then import into their ringtones folder. It worked. Now pc users just need a friend with a mac.

Apparently there's an iTunes 7.4.3 now. Anyone tried MIR with it yet?

would the new iphone firmware consider this hack an app and turn my phone into a brick?  i've got my nifty ringtones set up ... and haven't updated itunes yet.  now i'm worried about the new iphone firmware.  anyone experience anything bad?

If you hate the ringtone limitations as much as I do then sign this petition to Apple:

Damn!  The new firmware allows you to add the ringtones, but once they're on the phone they don't play. :/  Any word on how to fix this yet?

Yeah the MIR software will still add the aac files to the list of ringtones, and will still even sync the ringtones to the iphone, but when you go to your sounds menu on the iphone, none of them are there. Thanks Apple.

If you have already upgraded to 1.1.1, the only way to move your own ringtones to iphone is remove your itunes 7.4.x and install itunes 7.4.0 and follow the methods according to http://cybersurge.org/2007/10/02/custom-ringtones-with-iphone-firmware-version-111/

Not sure if you need makeiphoneringtone to do the second step as long as you change the stik value to 14.

Jess

This didn't work for me :(  Tried a bunch of different ringtones, but nothing.  What did you mean by changing the stik value to 14?

Free the iPhone!  Ringtones that you already own or sounds that you create yourself should be allowed on the iPhone.  Apple is getting a bit greedy.  If you feel the same way, sign this petition:
