This is precisely why we support the EFF. It’s also a perfect example of one of the major problems with DRM.

We’ve previously posted several articles about making ringtones with our software, both for the iPhone and for any phone that can accept them. Using Fission, you can losslessly edit MP3 and AAC audio files, trimming them down as desired for that perfect ringtone. And with MakeiPhoneRingtone, you can quickly get those files onto an iPhone.

Recently, we’ve seen a lot of traffic coming from a tutorial. We figured you, our faithful readers, may be interested in reading step-by-step instructions on using Fission and MakeiPhoneRingtone to get ringtones on your iPhone. Also worth noting is that while Fission cannot edit protected AAC files purchased from the iTunes Store, you can re-record these files to standard AAC. To do this using Audio Hijack Pro, you just need to hijack audio from iTunes, then play the desired file and record to AAC. You’ll get a recording of the purchased file in standard AAC format, which Fission can then edit. This re-recording introduces one generation of quality loss, but for uses such as ringtones, this may be just fine.
