The Radio Guide
The Radio Guide serves as the heart of Radioshift. Learn more about the Guide in these sections.
The Guide's Home Page - Information on the Home page in the Radio Guide.
Guide Listings - Details on the two types of listings in the guide.
Exploring The Guide - Find new content with the Guide's Explore views.
Filtering Guide Results - Narrow down results from the guide by filtering.
The Guide's Home Page
The heart of Radioshift is the Radio Guide. The guide has listings on over 50,000 radio programs and stations, with more information being added all the time. Using the guide, you can find hours and hours of great content to listen to and enjoy.
The Guide's Home page
This is the default view of the Guide's Home page. From here, you can search the guide with keywords, view current Popular stations and programs, and access your own Favorites, all with just a few clicks. Read on to learn more about each section.
Search
With Search, you can browse the Guide with keywords, including station names/identifiers ("KBBL") or music types ("Rock"), as well as the names of specific programs ("Car Talk"). Search is great for pulling up listings when you know what you're looking to find.
To search, just enter your keywords in the field and click Search. Once your results appear, you can browse through them or narrow them down with the filters at the bottom of the Search section. See the Filtering Guide Results page for more details on filter.
Popular
The Popular section shows the ten most popular listings from the guide, based on the listening habits of thousands of users around the globe. In the default view, you'll see the top 3 results. Just click See All... to view all ten results. You can then click a particular listing for more details.
Favorites
The Favorites section shows listings from the Guide that you've marked as a Favorite. Using Favorites, you can quickly access the programs and stations you listen to the most.
You can add a listing to your favorites from its Details page by clicking Add To Favorites, as seen above. To remove an item, just click Remove From Favorites on the listing's Details page.
Guide Listings
Each listing in the guide has its own Details page. There are two types of Details page, one for Stations and one for Programs, but each shows all the information currently available for the listing.
Station Details
Station Details pages show the available information for a specific radio station. This information varies by station. Below is the Station Details page for WBOS, an FM station based just outside of Boston, Massachusetts.
Station Details
If the station is currently broadcasting, clicking Listen Now will tune in to the station immediately. Clicking Add To Favorites will save the listing as a favorite (accessible from the Home page). Finally, clicking Subscribe to create a new Subscription. See Subscribing To Audio From The Guide for more details.
At the bottom of the Station Details page is the Program Listings table. Not all stations have this information, but when its available this table shows what Programs will air throughout the day. Each Program in the table can then be double-clicked to load its Program Details page.
Program Details
Below is the Program Details page for the Over Easy After Dark program on WBOS.
Program Details
The Program Details page shows the details on the program. Just like Station Details, different levels of information are available for different programs. This particular program has a useful summary, genre information and air dates.
The Listen Now button is unavailable because the program isn't currently playing, but clicking it when the program is airing will load the stream. This Program can also be made a Favorite with Add To Favorites or subscribed to by clicking Subscribe. See Subscribing To Audio From The Guide for more details.
Exploring The Guide
The Guide's home page allows searching via keywords and shows the current most popular listings. Radioshift also features two additional ways to explore the guide, so you can find, listen to, and record great previously-undiscovered content.
The Genres View
Browsing by Genres can pull up a particular type of stream or program with ease.
The Genres View, viewing the News genre
With the Genres view, the guide can be browsed based on content type. For instance, clicking the News genre in the Spoken section will filter down to just News stations. Clicking a particular listing will go to its details page, while clicking the blue Listen Now button in the lower left will tune in live.
The World View
The World view is a great way to find new stations and content from around the world, all from the comfort of home.
The World View, viewing Sydney
The World view is perhaps the most exciting way to find content in the guide. Clicking on World in the Guide's toolbar will bring up a map of the Earth. Clicking a city will bring up results from that location. In the screenshot above, Sydney is selected and filtered to just show stations. 38 different radio stations out of Sydney are currently available to listen to from across the globe.
Filtering Guide Results
While browsing the guide, the Filtering controls can help narrow down the results show. These controls consist of four distinct groups, each working independently. Turning off all filters will reveal every possible match.
View Toggle
The first group switches the view type. Choose between viewing a graphical list and a text table.
Genres
The second group adjusts the genre of listings shown. Filter between Spoken, Music, and/or Sports listings.
Listing Types
The third group adjusts the type of listings shown between individual Programs and entire Stations.
Now Playing Toggle
The final group can be used to toggle the visibility of audio that's not currently on the air. To view only audio that's immediately available, turn on the Now Playing button.
Subscriptions
Radioshift is about putting radio on your schedule, by enabling you to subscribe to content. Once a subscription is made, Radioshift will record the audio any time it's on, and have it ready for listening at any time.
Subscribing To Audio From The Guide - Make Subscriptions from listings in the Radio Guide.
Manually Creating Subscriptions - Make Subscriptions by entering information manually.
Subscriptions From The Guide
With Radioshift's Radio Guide, audio can be subscribed to in as little as one click.
Program Subscriptions
The easiest way to subscribe to content is from a Program Details page. Below is the Program Details page for Over Easy After Dark, on WBOS, found by searching the guide.
Program Details
The guide has all the information needed for this listing, so clicking Subscribe causes a new subscription to be created and appear in the Subscriptions list on the left. Just like that, everything is all set! Radioshift will record the audio from 7 PM to midnight on the WBOS stream and the audio will be ready for listening as soon as the recording is finished.
Subscribed To A Program
Station Subscriptions
Not all stations have program listings. However, if you know what a station will be playing or you just want to record a few hours of audio for later listening, you can make a Station Subscription. Subscribing to a Station will accommodate this easily.
Station Details
Creating a Station Subscription starts at the Station Details page in the guide. Above are the details for Rock 95, which has no Program Listings. Nevertheless, clicking Subscribe causes a new Subscription to be created.
Subscribing To A Station
This subscription opens in Edit mode, as indicated by the warning stripes at the top and bottom of the window. By default, this subscription will only record once, for an hour, starting two minutes in the future. This can be edited as desired, then finalized by clicking Save Changes in the top right. The subscription is then all set.
Manually Creating Subscriptions
The Radio Guide features tens of thousands of listings, but there may still be content not listed in the Guide. With manual Subscriptions, this content can be recorded too.
Internet Radio Subscriptions
Choosing New Internet Radio Subscription from the Subscriptions menu opens a new Internet Radio Subscription in edit mode.
A Manually Created Internet Subscription In Edit Mode
The settings for this subscription can be adjusted right here, including times and other details. For a manual subscription, the URL of the stream must be entered it in the Record area. Once all settings are adjusted and Save Changes in the upper right is clicked, the subscription is ready to go.
Radioshift can play and record Real Audio, Windows Media, QuickTime, and MP3 streams, provided the proper players are installed. See The "Install Players" Window page for more details.
AM/FM Radio Subscriptions
When coupled with a RadioShark USB radio from Griffin Technology, Radioshift can listen to and subscribe to AM/FM content. Selecting New AM/FM Subscription from the Subscriptions menu will create a manual AM/FM Radio subscription.
A Manually Created AM/FM Subscription In Edit Mode
All the settings for this subscription, including radio frequency, times and other details, can be set here. When setting the frequency, the Radio controller will appear and provide an audible preview.
Once Save Changes is clicked, the subscription is ready to go.
Listening To Audio
Radioshift just may be the only media player you'll need for streaming audio. Read on to see all the ways to listen to audio with Radioshift.
Listening To Live Audio - Listen to content live as it plays.
Listening To Recorded Audio - Listen to content previously recorded by a Subscription.
The "Install Players" Window - Install Players to access more content.
Listening To Live Audio
A Listen Now button, in the form of a blue play icon, will show for some listings when browsing the guide. This button indicates that the listing is currently playing and may be listened to live.
When the Listen Now button is clicked, Radioshift's simple player will appear and the listing will automatically start playing.
Radioshift's player controls
The player's volume slider will adjust output volume, while the Stop button will stop playback of the stream. The LCD shows information on the stream, including details on what's currently playing when available. Clicking the Info button in the LCD will load the stream's details page.
Listening To Recorded Audio
When a subscription is made, audio will be recorded automatically by Radioshift. When Radioshift is launched after recordings are made, a badge will be shown next to each subscription with new, unheard recordings.
Clicking a subscription in the list will show its details page. From the list at the bottom, recordings can be played by double-clicking, activating Radioshift's player.
Radioshift's player controls
From here you can adjust output volume with the volume slider and hit Stop to end playback. Clicking the Info button in the LCD will take you to the stream's details page.
Recordings can be managed from the toolbar at the bottom of the subscription. Clicking Send to iTunes will cause the selected files to be published to a custom playlist in iTunes for each subscription. Clicking Edit Audio will send the selected files to the audio editor currently set in the Preferences window. Clicking Move To Trash will of course move the recording to the Trash.
The "Install Players" Window
Under the Radioshift menu is the "Install Players" window, as seen below.
The "Install Players" window
This window shows what players and audio streams Radioshift supports. QuickTime and Shoutcast streams are automatically supported.
RealAudio and Windows Media
To playback RealAudio and Windows Media streams, additional software may need to be installed, specifically the Flip4Mac component and RealPlayer. Once installed, Radioshift will support these streaming formats as well.
AM/FM Radio
To playback local AM/FM content, a RadioShark USB radio from Griffin Technology is required. Radioshift supports tuning and recording from the RadioShark.
Preferences
Radioshift's preferences can be accessed from the Radioshift menu.
Radioshift's Preferences window
Recorder Settings
Recording format: The Recording Format determines the audio settings Radioshift will use to record, including the file format (AAC, MP3, AIFF, or Apple Lossless) as well as the bitrate for compressed formats (AAC and MP3).
Save recordings to: The Recording Location determines where audio files are saved on your hard drive. By default, this is in the Music folder of your Home folder, but you can set it to a different location or a different drive entirely.
Automatically wake/power-on: When this option is on, Radioshift will attempt to wake the machine from sleep or power it on as needed to record audio. For Power-on to work, you must have automatic login turned on in the Accounts System Preference.
General Settings
Edit audio with: Select the editor to be used with Radioshift. Radioshift will pass audio files off to the selected editor when the Edit Audio button in a Subscription is pressed. We recommend our own audio editor Fission, but any audio editor should work fine.
Show recording status in menu bar: This setting toggles the Recording Status Indicator, visible in the menu bar.
Show count of unheard recordings in Dock: This setting toggles the badge on the Dock icon, showing how many new recordings Radioshift has.
Automatically check for updates: With this on, Radioshift compares itself to the most current version available from our server and alerts you when a new version is available. Leave this on to stay up-to-date.
Guide Settings
Hide listings that require additional software: By default, the Radio Guide lists programs that may require additional software to be played. We recommend installing the Flip4Mac component and RealPlayer, so you can access all audio streams. This can be done from the the Install Players... window, under the Radioshift menu.
If you chose not to install all the audio players, you can turn this setting on to filter out audio from players you don't have installed. Please be aware that doing so will provide more limited Guide searches.
Hide unsupported listings: In the interests of completeness, the Radio Guide has some listings that can not currently be played due to limitations in Radioshift. To hide these listings entirely, simply turn this checkbox on. Please be aware that doing so will provide more limited Guide searches.
