Hours of Buffering

Create a buffer of content, then jump past songs, ads, or anything else you don't want to hear.

Read the Intermission overview or just dive right in! You can always return to this manual via the Support sub-menu, right in Intermission's menu.

Intermission's main menu

Intermission: Pause & Rewind Live Audio

With Intermission, you have full control of audio on your computer. Intermission creates a buffer of audio, allowing you to pause and rewind live audio. Pause streamed content while you take a call or use the restroom. Jump back and replay something you missed, then jump forward to the live audio. You can even start streaming audio playing on services like Pandora, iTunes Radio, or Spotify, pause it to build a buffer, then skip right past the songs you don't want to hear.

Getting Started

We recommend having a quick read-through of this manual, but you can also just dive in if you like. You can refer back to the full manual for assistance at any time. Just click the Intermission icon in your menu bar, then select "Intermission Manual" from the Support sub-menu.

System Requirements

Installation and Removal

To install Intermission, drag it from your download folder to the Applications folder. On its first launch, Intermission will install its audio-handling component.

If you wish to remove Intermission, choose Uninstall from Intermission's Options sub-menu. After that uninstallation is complete, you can simply drag Intermission to the Trash.

Purchasing Intermission

We provide a free trial of Intermission for you to test. During the trial, buffered audio from Intermission is overlaid with noise after ten minutes of playback. Live audio is never affected. The full version of Intermission can be unlocked with a license key from our online store.

When you're ready, head over to http://rogueamoeba.com/store/ to purchase Intermission.

For more information, see the Purchasing page.

Using Intermission

Get started with details on the main Intermission controls.

Intermission can be accessed by clicking on its menu bar icon. This icon can be found in the upper right of your menu bar, near the clock:

Clicking this icon will reveal Intermission's main menu, which contains all of its information and controls.

At the top of Intermission's menu, you'll see the visual representation of the audio buffer, which holds up to the past three hours of audio from your Mac. The slider can be adjusted to move around the buffer. Just click and drag the knob to move around in the buffer. Above the knob, you'll see the current position in the audio. In the screenshot, audio playback is 7 minutes and 6 seconds behind live. When audio playback is occurring live, the bubble simply reads "Live".

Below the buffer, you'll see Intermission's main controls. Select these to pause or resume playback, jump backward or forward in the audio buffer, or jump all the way to live audio playback.

Finally, at the bottom of the menu you'll find secondary controls and information, including access to Intermission's Preferences and License windows, as well as the Quit option.

Global Keyboard Shortcuts

In addition to dragging the buffer's position knob, and using the menu options, you can rapidly move around Intermission's audio buffer using the global keyboard shortcuts. With these shortcuts, you can pause or resume playback, jump back or forward in the buffer, and jump to the present.

The keyboard shortcuts can be set in the Preferences window, accessible via the Options sub-menu in the main Intermission menu.

Why should I buy Intermission?

Put simply, you should buy Intermission because it isn't free - we give you a chance to test out the program and all its features before you buy it. It's like test driving a car, for as long as it takes you to decide.

In trial mode, all of Intermission's features are available to try, but it won't work for full-time use. During the trial, buffered audio from Intermission is overlaid with noise after ten minutes of playback. Live audio is never affected.

If you use Intermission and find you like it, please purchase a license key - support the software you use and love!

To purchase your license key, just visit http://rogueamoeba.com/store/.

What's your upgrade policy?

Our philosophy regarding paid upgrades is simple: We try to do what's right for you and what's right for us.

Rogue Amoeba doesn't have a hard and fast upgrade policy, just a great track record. Since 2002, across our entire product line, we've provided dozens of major updates and hundreds of new releases total, free of charge.

If we add substantial new functionality, we may charge an upgrade fee. However, we do not make most of our income from recurring sales, and we provide nearly all updates free of charge, including both bug fixes and new features. Finally, when an upgrade fee is charged, we even grandfather in a generous amount of recent purchases with free upgrades.

What's your refund policy?

All Rogue Amoeba products are available as demos for an evaluation prior to purchase. We believe that no customer should have to buy software in order to find out how well it works. Our software can be fully evaluated with no limitations in capabilities, prior to purchase. Customers are strongly encouraged to take advantage of these trials prior to purchase. You may also seek any needed technical support from us - we answer support emails rapidly and responsively for current and potential customers alike.

If you would like a refund, please contact hello@rogueamoeba.com within 14 days of your purchase. Because we cannot recover the license key that was sold, refunds are issued on a case-by-case basis.

Recording Audio

With Intermission, you can turn back time to hear audio you've missed. When you team Intermission up with our audio recorder Audio Hijack, you get the power to record audio from the past as well. Not too shabby!

Preliminary Setup

Before you can record from Intermission, it needs to be running. Be sure to install Intermission and leave it running. Once you've done this, you'll be all set to record from Intermission at any time.

Recording

When you want to record, queue the audio up in Intermission, and pause playback, then open Audio Hijack. Create a new "System Audio" session and tweak its settings as you like, then activate it with the Record button. After that, once you resume playback in Intermission, its audio will flow through Audio Hijack and be recorded!

Getting Audio Hijack

You can download a free trial of Audio Hijack right from our site. Test it out, then purchase right online.

If you also want to edit the audio recording you've made, you should check out our fast and lossless audio editor Fission. Of course, you can test that out for free as well.

Using Intermission alongside Airfoil

To avoid creating bizarre and confusing audio loops, Intermission automatically excludes audio from our application Airfoil from its buffer. However, we know some users will want to use Intermission's functionality of pausing and rewinding audio alongside Airfoil. This can be done with relative ease, though it requires a bit of a different setup.

The Setup

1) Once Airfoil and Intermission are both installed, open Airfoil and set its source to "System Audio" as pictured, then transmit to your desired output(s).

Airfoil Screenshot
Set "System Audio" as your source in Airfoil

2) Play audio as you normally would, in any applications. If you wish to pause or rewind the audio, just use Intermission to do so. That audio will flow through Airfoil, just as you'd expect.

That's it! You should now be set getting current or past audio with Intermission alongside Airfoil.

Getting Airfoil

If you don't yet have Airfoil, you can download a free trial right from our site. Test it out, then purchase right online.
