Updates for MacOS 10.15 (Catalina)

We had a long summer of work to support Apple's new version of MacOS, known as “Catalina”. You may have seen recent updates to literally all of our current Mac apps. These new versions mean all of our software has support for Catalina. They also include many additional new features and improvements.

To get set for Catalina, make sure you've got the latest versions of Airfoil, Audio Hijack, Farrago, Fission, Loopback, Piezo, or SoundSource. These applications require updates to run on Catalina, due to changes in the way audio is handled. Catalina also drops support for “32-bit” applications, so anyone still using Audio Hijack Pro 2 or Nicecast should move up to Audio Hijack 3 before installing Catalina.

We should also point you to our Status page, which is updated whenever a new MacOS is coming. It's always a good idea to check compatiblity before updating.

Loopback 2.1 Is Now Available

In our May mailing, we mentioned an update to our audio routing tool Loopback was coming along. Last month, Loopback 2.1 arrived! It brings full Dark Mode support with a new optional Dark theme, as well as improved hardware device tracking, and a slew of improvements to smooth out your work flow.

Recent Updates in Audio Hijack 3.6

Audio Hijack 3.6 was our last Catalina update, and it includes several great additions. Besides support for the new OS, this update includes updated versions of our audio clean-up plugins, Declick, Dehum, and Denoise. We've also worked hard to improve tracking of physical audio devices (just as we did in Loopback). Additional improvements include an overhauled Source selector in the Application block and basic Dark Mode support. See our blog post to learn more.

Audio Hijack makes it easy to record any audio on your Mac, but that's only part of the story. It will help you record streams from the web, create a podcast, broadcast an internet radio station, and more. Visit our Audio Hijack page to learn all about it. If you're already an Audio Hijack user, just choose “Check for Update” to get the latest.

A Note on Catalina and Audio Unit plugins

If you use third-party Audio Units on your Mac (in Audio Hijack or SoundSource, for instance), you should be aware of changes made by Apple In Catalina. These changes mean that at present, many third-party plugins aren't compatible with Catalina.

Audio Unit plugins on Catalina are required to be both “code signed” and “notarized”. Plug-in developers will be the ones to worry about that. However, end users should be aware that very few third-party Audio Units currently meet these requirements.

If you depend on Audio Units in your work, be extremely cautious about updating to 10.15. Check with the developers of your Audio Units for updates, which will be necessary. Further, for the most critical production setups, setting up a test machine is a great way to verify that everything works as expected before updating your main machine.
